MY MISSION AS A KARATE TEACHER – THE PRESERVATION OF ASAI RYU:

I’m on a mission, insofar as teaching karate is concerned, and that mission is to pass on the karate of my late teacher, Tetsuhiko Asai Sensei, as that was his final request to me (see the interview link below). Asai Sensei had me conduct his final interview in English and contrary to the commercial interests of certain JKS people (who have tried to discredit me), he assigned me to keep his Asai-ha Shotokan-ryu alive (here’s a link to that interview: http://www.theshotokanway.com/asaisenseiarchiveinterview2.html).
Ironically this happened on the ‘The Shotokan Way’ website where the interview is actually featured! Returning back to what matters, besides this interview making certain instructors looking like the businessmen they are, it really establishes what I am doing, insofar as teaching Asai Karate is concerned.

SUMMARY OF MY KARATE SEMINARS THIS YEAR:
This year, in addition to my daily training and teaching in Japan and here in New Zealand, included Asai-ha Shotokan-ryu seminars, special trainings and embu (demonstrations) in the following locations:

THEMATIC BASE OF MY TEACHING THIS YEAR: – “THIS IS ASAI KARATE!”
The content of my seminars this year have been very basic with the target of “introducing Asai Shotokan Karate” at grassroots level. I am not saying this as a commercial ploy (to encourage people to bring me back) but rather, the skills I’ve taught have been the “key fundamentals” which seminar participants can assimilate, then go forward accordingly without my tuition. My thinking is based on the common saying “Give a person food, you will feed them for a day…Teach a person to farm, and you have fed them for a lifetime.”

THE MISSION CONTINUES – SEMINARS IN THE NEW YEAR:

In 2011 I’ll teach in Malaysia, Japan, New Zealand and possibly several other countries (depending on scheduling). Of course, for groups without Asai style Shotokan Karate experience, the kihon principles will remain the same; however, as always, I will teach different kata and kumite techniques next year to hopefully ensure that all of Sensei’s karate is preserved.

On Saturday 7th November some of the members of Kerry Shotokan Karate School attended a workshop in Kenmare FSKD Dojo. Sensei Niall Wright did a workshop on Katas focusing on what to do and not do in a competition to improve the level of our Katas. Through a number of exercises based on Heian Nidan, we learned to improve our posture, Kime and stance.

After a short break, Sensei Charles Neri conducted a short session on basics (Kihon) followed by further exercises based on the Kata Bassai Dai.

We completed the workshop by some advice on refereeing and each of the participant had a chance to either referee a match either as a corner judge or as main referee.

We would like to thank Sensei Niall for his hospitality and a very enjoyable day and hope to renew the experience, probably on the third weekend in January, in Killorglin.

A reminder that the FSKD is organising a seminar in their Kenmare Dojo on Saturday 7th November. As part of the seminar, Sensei Charles has been asked to do a presentation on Katas.

The Seminar is starting at 11:00 am and the cost of entry is €15.

Any member of Kerry Shotokan Karate School are welcome to attend.
